Type Matchup Chart

Which types hit which, for the Pokémon games from Generation VI on.

Pick one or two types — a third replaces the first.

Every move has a type, and so does every Pokémon — one type or two. A move that is super effective does double damage, one that is not very effective does half, and some matchups do nothing at all. Against a Pokémon with two types the two matchups multiply, which is how a weakness becomes ×4 — Ice against a Dragon/Flying Pokémon — or cancels out to ×1.

This is the chart used from Generation VI (X and Y) onward, with the Fairy type. Every one of its 324 cells is checked against PokéAPI's data. Abilities, held items, weather and Terastallization can all change what actually happens in a battle; this chart is the types alone.

To look a Pokémon up by name and see its own matchups, the Pokémon Database has a page per Pokémon.

What is a ×4 weakness?

When both of a Pokémon’s types are weak to the same attacking type, the two ×2 multipliers combine: Ice against Dragon/Flying, or Grass against Water/Ground, does four times the damage.

Does an immunity beat a weakness?

Yes. ×0 times anything is ×0, so a Water/Ground Pokémon takes nothing from Electric moves even though Water alone is weak to Electric.

Which games does this chart cover?

Generation VI (X and Y) and every main-series game since, which all use the same 18 types. Earlier games had no Fairy type and a few different matchups.
