Staff paper — manuscript paper — is the blank page music is written on by hand. This page draws one sheet of it to your choice and sends it to your printer at true size: the paper, the clef, how far apart the lines are, how many lines of music fit, and whether each has a guitar tablature staff beneath it. Nothing is uploaded; the sheet is drawn in your browser, and the settings travel in the link, so a teacher can send a class exactly the paper they want.

Systems. A system is one line of music across the page. With a treble or bass clef it is a single five-line staff; a grand staff is two, treble above bass, joined by a brace at the left the way piano music is written. The tablature option adds a six-line staff under each system, one line per guitar string, spaced half as wide again so there is room for fret numbers. The systems are spread evenly from the top margin to the bottom one, so the page is full whatever number you choose, and a grand staff is never split across a page edge.

Staff size. The three sizes are engravers' rastral sizes: large is a 9.2 mm staff, the size used in beginners' books and for children learning to write notes; medium is 7.4 mm, comfortable for most handwriting; small is 6.0 mm, for dense sketches and orchestral work. Between systems there is always at least one and a half staff heights of space, enough for ledger lines above and below and for lyrics.

Printing. The Print button opens your browser's print dialog with only the sheet: no site header, no controls, and black lines on white whether the page is in light or dark mode. The sheet is drawn at its real size with half-inch margins already inside it, so choose "100%" or "Actual size" rather than "Fit to page" if your dialog offers the choice. The dialog can also save the sheet as a PDF. Download SVG saves the same drawing as a vector file that scales to any size without blurring.

Where the clefs come from. The treble clef, bass clef and brace are drawn from the outlines of Bravura, the music font Steinberg publishes under the SIL Open Font License, so they print as crisp as the lines around them on any printer.

Which staff size should I choose?

Medium (a 7.4 mm staff) suits most handwriting. Choose large (9.2 mm) for young children or anyone starting out, since the notes are bigger and easier to place on the right line or space. Choose small (6.0 mm) to fit more systems on a page, for sketching or for writing out several parts.

What is a grand staff?

Two staves, treble above bass, joined at the left by a brace: the staff piano music is written on, with the right hand usually in the treble and the left in the bass. Each system on the page is one grand staff, and the two staves of a system are never split across a page.

Can I print staff paper with guitar tab?

Yes. Tick "Tablature staff under each system" and each system gets a six-line tab staff beneath it, labelled TAB, with one line per string. It works with any clef, or with no clef at all if you only want tab with a staff for rhythm above it.

Why does the printed staff come out a different size?

The print dialog is scaling the page. The sheet is drawn at true size with its margins already in it, so set the scale to 100% or "Actual size" rather than "Fit to page", and pick the same paper size in the dialog as on this page.

Is it free to use and share?

Yes, with no account and no watermark. Copy the link to share the exact paper — paper size, clef, staff size, systems and options all travel in it.
