The Total Solar Eclipse of August 2, 2027

Where the path of totality crosses, when it arrives in each city on local time, and how long the sun is gone.

Cities in the path of totality

10 cities on Monday, August 2, 2027, in the order the shadow reaches them. Times are each city's own clock. Totality runs from second contact (C2) to third (C3).

Just outside the path

A deep partial eclipse is not a total one: with any of the sun showing, the sky stays light, the corona stays hidden, and eye protection is needed throughout.

Every time on this page is computed for the city's own coordinates from NASA's Besselian elements for this eclipse — the same calculation the calculator and the city pages run — and shown on that city's clock. First contact is when the moon's disc first touches the sun's; second and third contacts bound totality; fourth contact is when the last of the moon leaves. The figures are for sea level and the moon's mean limb, and agree with the US Naval Observatory's to within a few seconds on the eclipses it publishes.

The path. The moon's shadow first touches Earth in the mid-Atlantic, crosses the Strait of Gibraltar between Spain and Morocco, and runs along the North African coast through Algeria, Tunisia and Libya into Egypt. It is greatest at 10:06 UTC near 26°N, 33°E, then crosses the Red Sea into Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia, and leaves Earth in the Indian Ocean. The list on this page is the cities this site covers that lie inside it, in the order the shadow reaches them; it is not every town in the path.

Near the edge, check a map. Within a kilometre or two of a path's edge, the mountains on the moon's limb decide whether you see totality, and these figures model the limb as smooth. For a site near the edge, use a detailed path map such as NASA's.

How long does totality last on August 2, 2027?

Up to 6m 23s on the central line at greatest eclipse, at about 26°N, 33°E, near Luxor — the longest totality of any eclipse in this site's 2024–2040 catalogue. Away from the central line it is shorter, falling to nothing at the edges of a path about 258 km wide. Among the cities on this page, Sohag has the longest: 6m 22s.

Which cities are in the path of totality?

Of the cities this site covers, 10 are inside it: Tangier (4m 50s), Cádiz (2m 53s), Gibraltar (4m 27s), Málaga (1m 50s), Benghazi (6m 09s), Sohag (6m 22s), Qena (6m 12s), Luxor (6m 20s), Jeddah (6m 00s) and Mecca (5m 09s). Each figure is computed for the city's own coordinates, so a city near the edge of the path is in it or out of it on its own, not because its country is.

What about cities just outside the path?

They see a deep partial eclipse, which is not the same thing: even 99% of the sun covered leaves daylight, and no corona. Algiers gets 99.8%, Tunis gets 97%, Casablanca gets 97%. Eye protection is needed throughout a partial eclipse.

Is it safe to watch?

Only during totality itself, between the second and third contacts listed for each city. Before and after, while any of the sun shows, looking at it needs ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses or a solar filter; sunglasses are not filters.
